The pinhole surgical technique is recommended when there is a band of gum tissue, but the gum has pulled away from the tooth. This can cause tooth sensitivity, an unesthetic smile and sometimes the loss of the tooth. The Pinhole Surgical Technique is the latest treatment available for gum recession. Dr. Wiland understands your smile is not only a noticeable aesthetic feature, but it is also an important social indicator. As one of the first ways new and old friends determine your mood and decide to interact is your smile. Hiding your smile because of gum recession can effect your social life, as well as your physical health. The latest available treatment for gum recession, pinhole gum rejuvenation, allows you to smile again without the hassle or downtime of traditional gum surgery.
Pinhole gum surgery is a painless, non-invasive way of reversing gum recession. The Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST™) is a procedure in which Dr. Wiland uses specialized instruments to make a small hole in your gum and add collagen material which stabilizes the area that has gum recession. The procedure takes only about an hour to complete and requires no scalpels, sutures, or grafting. PST™ was developed and patented by John Chao, D.D.S. It has been featured in The International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, one of the most prestigious dentistry journals in the world. Dr. Wiland has received special training directly from Dr. Chao in this technique.
Traditional gum grafting uses donor connective gum tissue, often extracted from the roof of your mouth. The gum tissue is stitched to cover the exposed root. Since an incision is made and stitches are required, recovery from this procedure can be lengthy, up to 10 days, limiting your diet to soft, cool foods with additional post-op care. Gum grafting can only treat a few teeth per treatment, sometimes requiring patients to undergo multiple operations. The pinhole surgical technique can sometimes correct gum recession in one visit. The pinhole surgical technique requires no stitching or scalpels, resulting in minimal pain and a faster recovery. Results are immediate so you can ensure you can smile more beautifully faster! However, there should be some gum tissue present before the procedure. If there is not any gum tissue, then a traditional gum grafting technique is preferred.
Gum recession should be treated if exposed roots of your teeth are causing tooth sensitivity. It should also be treated to save the tooth or teeth involved. Gum tissue protects the bone that holds the tooth in the mouth. Gum recession treatment protects this bone and prevents the recession from progressing. Gum recession treatment has the best results when treated early. The goal of treatment is to protect the bone that remains so the tooth has the best support and foundation possible. This is just another reason why gum recession should be treated. Coverage of the exposed root is also a reason to treat gum recession. Coverage of the exposed root is attempted in many situations. When it has gone too long before treatment, then covering of the exposed root surface with gum tissue is not always possible. Gum recession allows bacteria to build up beneath your gum area. The buildup of plaque can ultimately result in tooth loss. Gum recession can occur gradually or quickly. The effects can be long lasting.
